Hello Reader, Earlier this year, I signed up to be a sponsor at the GROW 2026 Conference. (Shout out to Catherine Brown, who hosts. This event is amazing and 2027 tickets are out). GROW was to be the biggest marketing play of my year. I was taking time away from tax season and my family to be there. As a sponsor, I was completely booked solid. Fourteen back-to-back sessions over two days and there would be no breaks. I was excited, but I also knew I was going to be exhausted. (I’m actually a super introvert.) But I had to show up. These people needed my best self. So I called my friend Angie. I'd talked her into coming to this conference a few days before it started. I said, “Angie, it would be stupid not to have some kind of networking event, because this is the most important marketing event of my year. But I really need it to be fun. For the love of God, I need something that will help me recharge and have some fun.” Angie asked, “Can I make it weird?” That’s how we wound up at a Tiki Speakeasy, for a no-work dinner. We had a great time and I went into day two of GROW feeling refreshed and ready to go. A month or so later, I was neck deep in tax season. I texted Angie again and said, “Girl, tax season's wrapping up, and I’m about to lose my mind. Can we get out and do something fun?” She took me to a rage room, which was PERFECT. That's when we decided: why don't we do this more often? Why does fun only have to be a reward for crushing a goal? Why not just take the day off, do something exciting, come back to work ready to kick ass? Isn’t that why we started our own businesses in the first place… to have freedom? Angie mapped out an entire business plan… and that's how Founders Recess started. It's not just fun and hanging out though. We intentionally take adventurous white space to be more successful in our businesses, and more successful with our clients. When you're self-employed, why the hell not? This isn't goofing off or shirking work. It's how we are able to show up to work and be viciously awesome. And people don't do that enough. So it’s official… Founders Recess is launching to the public next weekend! I can’t wait. We’re going to have an online group and an in-person group here in Houston.
