😩 How am I supposed to know that...

Hello Reader,

This client call was going great, but now there’s a tense pause.

I’m walking this client through filing her 1099s. We’ve gone over which 1099 she should use, which vendors to pay, and a great software that makes filing easy. I tell her the deadline to file is Jan 31st.

“Every year?” she asks.

“Yup, every year.” I confirm.

That’s when she paused. Eyes downcast, this ashamed business owner finally mutters “See, how am I supposed to know that?”

Reader, that’s a fair question.

How are business owners supposed to know (and track!) everything about their finances?

An internet search is great, but unless you already know all the laws and jargon at play, how do you begin your search? What keywords should you use?

AI is making this kind of search even harder. Google AI overviews show misleading or inaccurate information in financial searches 43% of the time.

I don’t think business owners CAN reasonably know this stuff ahead of time. Tax laws change every year! I’m constantly reading and researching here.

So what’s the solution?

Someone who knows a lot about you and cares about your success needs to tell you when and where to pay attention. You need to trust this person has your back, so you can stay focused on the (much harder) job of growing your business and caring for your family.

And that’s what I told this client.

“You can’t know. That’s why you have me.”

In addition to 1099s, on this call we covered:

📌 When does a contractor need to become an employee?

📌 Do I need to make quarterly tax payments?

📌 Actually, what is self-employment tax?

📌 What other types of taxes are there?

📌 Oh, states govern sales tax! How can I make tracking and paying my sales tax easier as I expand into other states?

This client confesses to me “In the past, I would have let all these words fly past me. I would have just let it go as something I need to deal with later.”

But she was really impressed with the way I listened. I could quickly and easily define and outline how everything applied to her.

Not how each financial concept worked generally – but specifically how it worked FOR HER, her business, her goals, her money story.

I’m not trying to teach her accounting, I’m helping her run her business.

With such a clear focus, she walked away with a clear and easy plan – a truly holistic plan for the first time! – in less than an hour.

She now feels confident to go out and make a lot more money, knowing it will be smartly and strategically handled every step of the way.

Hi Reader, “I need momma,” she said with those big, soulful eyes. I was finishing a Zoom call and my 3-year-old daughter had wandered into my office. Every instinct in me wanted to scoop her up and drop everything else. But I also knew—I had a business to run. A business that pays the rent, keeps the lights on, and provides for the very child standing in front of me. So I did what felt like the hardest thing in that moment: I set a boundary. I pulled her in for a quick hug, but I said: “I...

Hi Reader, I clicked to review this tax return and winced. This new client started with us in February 2025. So while we can prepare and file her 2024 tax returns on time, we’re very limited in the strategies we can use to reduce her taxes. The year is already over. Which is why my face was now scrunched and unhappy. 😬 This client’s tax bracket was 24%. In the US, you pay different tax amounts at different levels of income. If you’re a single filer in 2024: You pay 10% tax on your first $0 -...

Hello Reader, Back in October 2016, I was a starry-eyed—yet completely broke—actress. My love affair with money was just beginning. I had a business license, an online course on starting a bookkeeping business, and a 400-square-foot apartment so cramped there wasn’t room for a desk. Every evening, I’d balance my computer on my lap and shove the dog over so I could sit on my smelly, second-hand couch from college—less than 100 feet from the stove, where my husband was making way too much noise...
